Characteristic with large round eyes, proportionally large pectoral and pelvic fins while also being in possession of a venomous spine. The venom is incredibly painful to humans, being able to cause necrosis, hallucination and localized paralysis. Their skeleton is constructed of cartilage, a resilient and rubber-like padding, giving them a smooth naked look, just like the shark. Beside looks, the rat fish have claspers used for fertilization of females. When looking close enough at the head of the Chimaera dots are aligned with almost perfection. These are the electrosensory organs, helping to locate crustacean and invertebrates in the dark waters. Though the diet consists mostly of crabs, molluscs and the likes, Chimaeras are opportunistic feeders, meaning they do not have a small niche of prey but rather a wide variety depending on location and season. It is not uncommon to catch them by accident when trawling for shrimps, and the sudden change in pressure from the deep sea to the surface causes fatality for these small fragile Chondrichthyes.
