Black Dragonfish

Black Dragonfish

The Black Dragonfish resides in the bathypelagic zone, making their black skin perfect camouflage in the dark waters. While looking like a spawn from “the Alien” movies, this omnivorous eats anything that fits in their mouth. Everything from algae on the rock to shrimps and squid. With very limited sunlight and sparse sources for food, Black Dragonfish adapted the ruthless environments the same way deep-sea anglerfish does; with a barbel which produces light. A major difference is the Black Dragons emit light in the red spectrum, using the light not only for attracting other fish, but to guide themselves in the dark. It is the only creature to have chlorophyll on the eyes, a pigment otherwise only found in plants. The female vertically migrates to the ocean surface at night, descending again in the daytime.
